"3 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN APPROACHING BRANDS FOR SPONSORSHIP"

For many riders, being sponsored by a brand is a goal, but what do you need to be aware of to increase your chances of success? We spoke to award winning PR adviser and social media expert Rhea Freeman for her three tips…

Brands get bombarded. Yes, brands receive a LOT of emails and DMs each day asking for support and sponsorship. Some are genuine, well thought through requests, but most aren’t, so you’re up against a lot of ‘noise’ when it comes to your pitch. This means you need to stand out for all the right reasons and make sure what you say is really relevant, helpful, and shows a commercial appreciation for how sponsorship works. Think of the value you can give first, and what you want to take second.

Know the brand. If you’re looking to stand out, make sure you know the brand and products before you pitch. Better still, follow them on their social media, sign up to their newsletters, buy the products, and then use and talk about them on your social media (with relevant tags, of course). This will show a brand that you really do get them and like them (vs just wanting free things!) and will also be more authentic to your following if and when things progress.

Always be polite. You don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes for that brand, so even if you are a perfect fit and deliver the most perfect pitch, the answer might still be no. However, it’s much more likely to be a ‘no for now’ vs, a ‘no, not ever!’, if you are polite at all times. Yes, you might be disappointed, but being understanding will help you in this situation and in future ones!
